Karen Niven,

Shell International


Karen has been with Shell for 8 years.  In her current role she is responsible for Global Non-technical Health Risk Management with Shell International, as well as being accountable for health governance.  She personally leads a multidisciplinary team of approx. 30 toxicologists; eco-toxicologists; and exposure scientists.

Prior to this she was the global discipline lead for industrial hygiene. Before joining Shell in 2005 her career spanned a wide breadth of industry sectors including consulting, applied research, academia and public sector.

She is a professional Industrial Hygienist and Chartered health and safety specialist, with a PhD in health and safety management.

She is a past President of BOHS & was their Hon. Treasurer for 9 years.  Currently she represents them on the IOHA Board

She currently also works regularly on personal, team and organisational development, including mentoring and executive and team coaching, which stems from a deep personal interest in the area.

When not at work, Karen enjoys driving classic and sports cars, as well as watching wildlife and keeping her garden in check
