Evaluation of REACH Tier 1 Tools

Time: 10:30 - 12:00

Date: Tuesday 28 April 2015

Generic tools are currently widely used within a tiered approach to chemical safety exposure assessment under REACH. The first tier tools include the ECETOC TRA, MEASE, EMKG-EXPO-TOOL, STOFFENMANAGER and RISKOFDERM. Although claiming a broad range of applicability, none of these tools has been extensively validated during their development. The German Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, (BAuA) therefore initiated and sponsored a comprehensive Evaluation of the Tier 1 Exposure Assessment Models (ETEAM). Carried out by the Institute of Occupational Medicine, Edinburgh and the Fraunhofer Institute for Toxicology, Hannover, the ETEAM project compared and contrasted the different REACH Tier 1 exposure assessment tools in terms of their conceptual and external validity, scope of application, reliability and user-friendliness. This themed workshop session describes the background, methods and results of the ETEAM project, and gives an overview of potential topics for future tool development.
