Bayesian Statistics: Overview and Practical Applications in Exposure Assessment Data Interpretation

Cost: £228.00
How to Book: Email conferences@bohs.org

The use of Bayesian tools are becoming common and offer exciting opportunities for improving the accuracy, efficiency, and transparency of our exposure judgments made by occupational hygienists on a daily basis. Freely available Bayesian tools can be used to formally combine our professional judgment regarding a particular exposure and its uncertainty along with the statistical analysis of current exposure data. The language and framework of the approach holds promise for expressing the output of exposure assessments in a manner that is much more easily understood and communicated than the output from more traditional statistical analysis. Best of all, the Bayesian decision analysis approach formalizes traditional exposure assessment processes already used by occupational hygienists today. These tools can be incorporated into any exposure control banding process and provides a framework for validating control category selections.

This PDC will provide an overview of the Bayesian framework for decision analysis and explore, through discussion and workshops, opportunities for its application in data interpretation, exposure risk assessment and controls.

Practical Ethics for Occupational Hygiene

Cost: £228.00
How to Book: Email conferences@bohs.org

The Practical Ethics PDC will introduce the occupational hygienist to theory and practice of professional ethics as applied to the practice of occupational hygiene. The knowledge and skills obtained from the PDC will enable the hygienist to work within a sound ethical framework that has a primary goal of protecting the health, safety and welfare of the worker and be able to develop practical ethical solutions based upon key ethical principles.

The Exposome and Exposure in the Workplace

Cost: £228.00
How to Book: Email conferences@bohs.org

The exposome is composed of every exposure to which an individual is subjected from conception to death. Methodologies that attempt to define the exposome are being developed, either using biomarkers or through characterizing the external environment and personal behaviour. These new techniques need to incorporate evaluation of occupational exposures, but the best strategies to this are still unclear.

The main aim of this PDC is to introduce the concept of the exposome and the main approaches being developed to quantify exposure within this paradigm. The session will discuss how occupational exposure could be captured within an exposome study and how these new technologies could be exploited to help manage workplace risks.

The PDC will explain the exposome concept and describe the approaches that are being developed to quantify human exposure within this paradigm. In particular, we will deal with the occupational exposome and discuss how it could be quantified. Lessons for occupational hygiene practice will be identified.
